Complete World Development Report Online - More free stuff!

The library was investigating a trial of the World Bank's Complete World Development Report Online.

This resource includes every page of every World Development Report published by the World Bank since the first report was released in 1978. You can search across reports, browsing by title or subject, or refer to the World Development background papers back to 2005.

While our consortium was negotiating the trial, the World Bank decided to provide access to the report free of charge, as part of the new open agenda at the World Bank.

One billion hungry and...

This opinion piece from Nature magazine offers offers some insightful comments on how we could work to solve major problems in the global food and agricultural system.

According to Joachim von Braun (director of the Center for Development Research and professor for Economic and Technological Change - Bonn University) the problem is that no independent body exists that is able to represent the interests of all nations. 

von Braun thinks that as long as the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) (currently administered by FAO) "remains under the control of UN organizations...and depends for funding on the very organizations it is supposed to guide," its hands are tied.

He suggests that the CFS be given the power to operate independently, to encourage government-to-goverment networks that would induce the kind of cooperation that would be beneficial to all.

FAO Library set up a brief trial with BioOne Online. BioOne complete collection provides integrated, cost-effective access to a thoroughly linked information resource of interrelated journals focused on the biological, ecological and environmental sciences. Currently, there are 166 journals in the collection. Trial ends on 1st November 2010.
