Agricultural value chain finance. Tools and lessons
By: Miller, C., Jones, L.
Bourton on Dunsmore, UK, 2010, 192 pp., 234 X 156 mm, PB Co-published with Pratical Action ISBN 978-92-5-106277-7 (FAO) ISBN 978-1- 85339-702-8 (Practical Action) Agriculture remains an important means of alleviating poverty, but shortage of finance can constrain its development. At the same time agriculture is evolving towards a global system requiring high-quality, competitive products and organized in value chains which often exclude smallholders. Value chain financing in agriculture offers an opportunity to increase the scope and reduce the cost and risk of financing to agriculture. It can also help value chains to be more inclusive, by making resources available for smallholders to integrate into higher value chains. Agricultural Value Chain Finance provides a comprehensive look at the models, tools and approaches used by industry leaders in all parts of the developing world. These are described, analysed and illustrated by many rich examples in order to demonstrate how they work and to extract lessons and applications for others to adapt. The book includes 40 industry examples and 5 comprehensive case studies to enrich the learning. This book is essential reading for bankers, microfinance practitioners, credit union leaders working in agriculture, NGO practitioners, agribusiness technical staff, researchers and policy makers.

The livestock sector contributes to the livelihoods of an estimated 70 percent of the world's rural poor. The increasing demand for animal protein in low and middle income countries provides an opportunity for the poor to improve their livelihoods. However, the nature of livestock farming is determined by policy and institutional frameworks that rarely favour the poor. Launched in 2001 by FAO, the Pro-Poor Livestock Policy Initiative
(PPLPI) facilitates and supports the formulation and implementation of livestock-related policies and institutional changes that have a positive impact on the world's poor. This publication comprises a user-friendly, non technical compilation of livestock sector policies/programmes, including case studies, to assist policy makers and development practitioners in formulating and implementing plans for institutional reforms and livestock sector-related policies that will benefit livestock farmers in particular and, in general, all stakeholders along the value chain.

In 2005, some 1.4 billion people lived in absolute poverty and nearly 1 billion were affected by chronic mal- or undernutrition. An estimated 75 percent of the world's poor live in rural areas, and at least 600 million of these keep livestock that enable them to produce food, generate cash income, manage risks and build up assets. With the valuable contribution that livestock makes to sustaining livelihoods, especially in rural areas, the development of small-scale livestock enterprises could be a key element of efforts to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. Milk production is an important livestock-sector activity and it is estimated that nearly 150 million farm households throughout the world are engaged in milk production. Small-scale milk production not only improves food security of milk producing households but also creates significant amounts of employment in the entire dairy chain, which comprises many small-scale rural processors and intermediaries. The aim of this book is to provide a holistic picture on the trends and drivers in the dairy sector as well as the implications these may have for the future of dairy farming, in particular among the smaller-scale, rural producers.

One of the main challenges of desertification is encroachment of moving sands, which has devastating environmental and socio-economic impacts. It reduces arable land, grazing land and availability of water resources, threatening agricultural productivity and yields and the food security and standard of living of local populations. Mauritania, as one of the most severely affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa, has accumulated a great deal of experience in combating sand encroachment over the past several decades. This publication synthesizes the lessons learned, particularly in the implementation of a recently concluded and highly successful project for rehabilitation and extension of the Nouakchott Green Belt. These lessons can be adapted to other countries facing similar challenges. The publication will be of interest to technicians, project managers, local communities and indeed all stakeholders engaged in combating desertification.

This paper reviews the current management of tuna fisheries by the five tuna regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), which focus on the management of target species in the light of international standards and modern expectations for fisheries management. The paper demonstrates that the scientific advice for the management of tuna stocks is not generally followed, at least not on a timely basis. The underlying issues that account for the failure of RFMOs to meet global standards and expectations are discussed and rights-based management systems are advanced as a means of addressing some of the management shortcomings.

The Pacific Islands region consists of 14 independent countries and 8 territories located in the western and central Pacific Ocean. The region's fishery resources can be broadly split into two main categories: oceanic
(offshore) and coastal (inshore). Oceanic or offshore resources include tunas, billfish and allied species. They are characterized by an open-water pelagic habitat and potentially extensive individual movements. Coastal or inshore resources include a wide range of finfish and invertebrates. They are characterized by their shallow-water habitats or demersal life-styles and restriction of individual movements to coastal areas. This paper discusses these two resource categories. Information is provided on the major types of fishing, the important species, the status of those resources and the fisheries management that occurs.
Report of the Inception Workshop of the FAO Extrabudgetary Programme on Fisheries and Aquaculture for Poverty Alelviation and Food Security. The programme's overall goal is to ensure that responsible and sustainable use of fisheries and aquaculture resources make an appreciable contribution to human well-being, food security and poverty alleviation. The workshop stressed the need to include fisheries and aquaculture, especially the small-scale subsectors, into poverty alleviation, food security and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes. These should be informed by a human rights approach to development. The challenges to advance the poverty alleviation and food security agendas are considerable.

This review is organized under four major divisions of aquatic macrophytes: algae, floating macrophytes, submerged macrophytes and emergent macrophytes. It covers aspects concerned with the production and/or cultivation techniques and use of the macrophytes in their fresh and/or processed state as feed for farmed fish. Efficiency of feeding is evaluated by presenting data on growth, food conversion and digestibility of target fish species. The paper provides information on the different processing methods employed and results obtained to date with different species throughout the world with particular reference to Asia. Finally it gives information on the proximate and chemical composition of most commonly occurring macrophytes, their classification and their geographical distribution and environmental requirements.
